On a night the Victoriaville Tigres honoured former star Matthew
Lombardi, a fellow centre stole the show against the best team in
the QMJHL.
Kevin Veilleux had two goals and two assists as the Tigres
stunned powerhouse Gatineau 6-3 Wednesday night, handing the
Olympiques just their second regulation loss of the season.
Veilleux scored 1:04 into the game and added his second midway
through the period as Victoriaville (6-5-0-0) broke out to a 3-0
lead and cruised from there. Benoit Doucet, Maxime Noreau and Jan
Kolarik added singles while Morten Madsen had three assists in the
victory.
Prior to the game, the Tigres hoisted Lombardi's No. 10 jersey to
the rafters in a ceremony honouring one of their greatest offensive
players of the past decade. The slick forward, who played for
Victoriaville from 1998-2002, had 109 goals and 148 assists in 250
career games.
His best season came in 2001-02, when he had 130 points (57
goals, 73 assists) in 66 games while leading the Tigres to the
Memorial Cup final, where they dropped a 6-3 decision to Kootenay.
The 24-year-old has three goals and two assists in six games with
the Flames this season.
In other QMJHL action Wednesday, it was: St. John's 3, Cape
Breton 1; and Quebec 6, Rimouski 4.
At Victoriaville, Que., Bryan Main, Brett Morrison and
Viatcheslav Trukhno replied for the Olympiques (11-2-0-1), who saw
their six-game winning streak come to an end. Gatineau has lost two
of three meetings with the Tigres this season.
Kevin Poulin stopped 28 shots to earn the win for Victoriaville.
Israel Bernier-Dion and Olivier Laliberte combined to make 21
saves for the Olympiques.
Fog Devils 3, Screaming Eagles 1
At Sydney, N.S., Mario Kempe's power-play goal at 6:04 of the
third period led St. John's past the Screaming Eagles.
Ryan Graham and Matt Fillier added third-period goals for the Fog
Devils (5-6-0-1), while Ilia Ejov made 44 saves in the victory.
Cam Fergus replied with his 12th goal for Cape Breton (8-7-0-0),
extending his points streak to a league-high 14 games.
Remparts 6, Oceanic 4
At Quebec, Roman Bashkirov and Maxime Lacroix each scored twice
in the Remparts' victory over Rimouski.
Angelo Esposito had a goal and three assists while Billy Bezeau
scored the other goal for Quebec (7-6-0-0).
Maxime Tanguay, Kevin Cormier, Jordan Caron and Michael Frolik
countered for Rimouski (1-9-3-0).
